News, Weather

A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. for counties in and around the Quad Cities.

The National Weather Service said snow accumulations between three and five inches are expected with Wednesday’s storm.  Winds are expected to gust up to 35 miles per hour and wind chill readings will be near zero.

Counties included in the warning are Muscatine, Scott, Carroll, Dubuque, Jones, Jackson, Cedar, Clinton, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Buchanan, Delaware, Benton, Linn, Iowa, Johnson, Keokuk, Washington and Jefferson counties.

Visibilities will drop to as low as a quarter-mile due to snow and blowing snow.  Temperatures are expected to drop into the low twenties.

“A winter storm warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.  This will make travel very dangerous or impossible, so only travel in an emergency and take your winter survival kit,” said a statement from the National Weather Service office in Davenport, Iowa.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. for Louisa, Henry (Iowa), Henry (Illinois), Des Moines, Van Buren, Lee, Whiteside, Rock Island, Mercer, Scotland and Clark counties.

Rain was forecast to change to snow during the morning commute, with total snow accumulations of two to four inches.
