“Ray Bandit” arrested, accused of 17 bank robberies

The man the FBI calls the “Ray Bandit” was caught January 15th near Chicago, after police say he fled the scene of a bank robbery in Elgin, Illinois.

Monday, January 21, 2013, the FBI told the Chicago Tribune that they have connected him to 17 robberies across 7 states, dating back to July.

Investigators say Jeremy Evans of Carol Stream, Illinois robbed banks from California to Virginia, including three banks in the Quad Cities. The FBI dubbed the serial robber the “Ray Bandit” because of the style of sunglasses he was seen wearing in surveillance video of the crimes.

They believe he robbed bank branches in two Quad City Hyvee stores and the American Bank and Trust in Milan.

Formal charges are pending in several states.
