The Iowa Department of Transportation says it will not issue driver’s licenses to young illegal immigrants who are now eligible to work in the U.S. under the Obama administration deferred prosecution policy.
The department released a press release Thursday stating that Iowa law does not allow it to issue driver’s licenses or non-operator identification cards to people who are not in the country legally.
According to KCRG-TV, the department has issued at least one driver’s license and one non-operator’s ID since President Obama announced his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. President Obama made a policy change in June to let certain illegal immigrants apply for a temporary work permit if they were brought into the country as children.
